NAWOJ Honours Minister of Women Affairs, Seeks Partnership

The National Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Hajia Aisha Ibrahim, led a delegation to the Ministry of Women Affairs to advocate for a collaborative partnership aimed at empowering women and children across the country. During the visit, NAWOJ extended its congratulations to Minister Imaam Sulaiman-Ibrahim on her recent appointment and her global recognition, including the Changemaker Award received in New York on the sidelines of this year’s International Women’s Day celebrations.

In her address, Hajia Aisha Ibrahim commended the Minister for her leadership and commitment to advancing women’s rights, emphasizing the Ministry’s transformative role in improving the welfare of women, children, and the girl child. She noted that NAWOJ shares the same goals and is committed to using its platform to address the pressing challenges faced by women and children in Nigeria.

“We believe that the empowerment of women is not just a responsibility, but an essential component for the progress of our nation,” Ibrahim stated, stressing the importance of collective efforts to create a future where women and girls can thrive without fear of violence or discrimination”.

Ibrahim also informed the Minister about NAWOJ’s upcoming National Conference in Borno State, themed “Women Journalists, Peace, and Security in Nigeria.” The conference will focus on the critical role of women journalists in promoting peace and security, particularly in conflict-prone regions affected by insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping.

In recognition of the Minister’s exceptional contributions to the advancement of women and children, NAWOJ announced that it would honor her with an Award of Excellence at the conference. Ibrahim expressed confidence that the award would further motivate Sulaiman-Ibrahim in her efforts to support women’s rights and gender equality.

In response, Minister Imaam Sulaiman-Ibrahim expressed her appreciation for the honor and reiterated her commitment to amplifying women’s voices across the country. She acknowledged the crucial role female journalists play in promoting gender equality and encouraged the adoption of the “SHE FOR SHE” initiative, emphasizing that women must support and protect one another to achieve their collective goals.

“Women are a powerful force, and when we come together, supporting each other, we can change the narrative for a better society,” she remarked, adding that with equal opportunities, women could significantly contribute to societal development.

The Minister also confirmed her intention to attend the NAWOJ National Conference and personally accept the award. She further urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive of the current administration’s efforts to make Nigeria a better place.

The courtesy visit was attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, management and staff, as well as members of the NAWOJ Board of Trustees, FCT NAWOJ Chairperson and Executives, and Zone D Vice Chairperson.
